infrastructure. The Associate will work under the general supervision of the Senior Observatory Systems and Network

Principal Responsibilities:
• Computer hardware and software, including system planning, procurement, installation and integration; assure availability and
robust performance of operational computers and data acquisition systems.
• Telecommunications, including WAN and LAN configuration, software and hardware maintenance, site cabling, networked
telephony and video distribution systems.

Qualifications:
Applicant must have substantial hands-on knowledge and experience with hardware and software for networked UNIX
systems (Linux, Solaris, IRIX, BSD); system scripting (shell/Python/Perl), Ethernet and TCP/IP; programming in C/C++.
Previous work experience at observatory or research facility is desirable.

receivers for the Expanded Very Large Array project of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Additional duties may

The applicant would be expected to have the ability to rapidly progress to position requiring minimum supervision. This
position has 1.5 year duration.
QUALIFICATIONS: A thorough background in radio frequency technology issues as provided by a two-year or more
formal technology curriculum is required. Two or more years experience in RF electronics, communications, and analog and
digital instrumentation, as well as some knowledge of digital electronics and instrumentation control software are required.
Some knowledge of astronomy, radio astronomy and a radio hobbyist background would be helpful. Experience in the use of
electronics and microwave RF test equipment, such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and
RF signal sources to debug problems with radio frequency components such as microwave amplifiers, mixers, filters, isolators,
relays and attenuators, as well as systems composed of such devices is required. Ability to read and follow electrical
schematics and RF block diagrams is required. Ability to assemble or debug RF electrical equipment without a schematic,
based on general principles and wire/signal tracing is required. Ability to work with personal computer spread sheet and word
or text processor software for data logging and documentation purposes is required. Ability to climb steep ladders in excess
of 100 feet, work in both lab and external weather environments, and lift portable test equipment, electronic sub assemblies, or
tool bags of weight up to 50 pounds. Must have, or have the ability to obtain, a valid New Mexico drivers license.

has an opening for an Instrument Maker with a minimum of 4 years experience in precision prototyping and
machining to assist in the design, fabrication and maintenance of a variety of opto-mechanical assemblies and
telescope instrumentation. Utilizing a variety of equipment, the Instrument Maker will perform various duties of
considerable difficulty involving precision machining to tolerances of +/- 0.0002”, checking, assembly, mounting and
trouble-shooting complex precision assemblies. Must be able to understand and work with everything from verbal
instructions to assembly drawings of complex mechanisms. Knowledge of GD&T, CNC, welding and anodizing are

All require a "Q" clearance which is what most Tech's at NWA had after 9/11 in the form of a 20 year background check.
Don't think you can't compete, your work history of safety, responsibility, flexibility and reliability are cornerstones of their
interview. These are day jobs, Monday through Friday with occasional night and weekend work. When asked if this presented
a problem I chuckled, then I explained what most airline Technicians are used to.
